Poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) Assisted Room-Temperature Synthesis for the Mass Production of Bismuth Oxychloride Ultrathin Nanoplates with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

Thin but strong: 3-5 nm ultrathin BiOCl nanoplates (BiOCl-UTNs) were prepared in large-scale at room-temperature in the solution of ethylene glycol and water with the assistance of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS). The strong electrostatic interaction between PSS and [Bi2O2]2+ layers inhibited the typical growth rate of BiOCl nanoplates along <001> direction resulted in the BiOCl-UTNs with high photocatalytic activity.

Preparation of Naphthalene Dianhydride Bithiophene Copolymers by Direct Arylation Polycondensation and the Latent Pigment Approach

Hidden talents: The combination of direct arylation polymerization and the latent pigment approach enables the synthesis of an n-type naphthalene dianhydride bithiophene copolymer: PNDAT2. The material can be prepared in situ by thermal treatment of the soluble corresponding tetraester precursor PNTET2. The electrochemical LUMO of PNDAT2 is −3.9 eV, consistent with similar naphthalenedimide-containing polymers.

Micro/nano-patterning of surfaces using supramolecular chemistry provides additional ways to control pattern formation and selectivity. Dye molecules equipped with different numbers of linker groups can anchor to cucurbituril (CB[8])-functionalized surfaces by formation of ternary host−guest complexes (see figure). The surface patterning of metal and polymer substrates allows the formation of cross-patterns determined by the valency of the dye molecules.

All-Optical Temperature Sensing in Organogel Matrices via Annihilation Upconversion

Modified organogels, based on natural oils/waxes and incorporating well-solvated organic dyes sensitive to minor microenvironmental changes, are employed as minimally invasive and ratiometric all-optical temperature sensors. A temperature sensitivity of better than 100 mK centered at 36 °C is obtained by using triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion as a sensing tool. The sensing materials operate in ambient environments, with their excitation and emission spectra fitting advantageously with the tissue transparency window.

Restricted access: An energetically available S1/S0 conical intersection seam allows for non-radiative decay of the aggregation-induced emission active molecule THBDBA to an S0 state in solution (THBDBA=10,10′,11,11′-tetrahydro-5,5′-bidibenzo[a,d][7]annulenylidene). The motion leading from the Franck-Condon structure to the seam is a cyclization, which must be blocked in the aggregate phase.

A new family of 2D coordination polymers based on 3d-4f 15-metallacrown-5 (MC) units was designed and characterized. The connection of the 15-metallacrown-5 subunits by the coordination of CuII and ligand led to the formation of 2D network of metallacrowns. The GdIII, TbIII, and DyIII complexes exhibit slow magnetic relaxation, and the DyIII complex is a single-molecule magnet under 1000 Oe dc field.

Toward Metal-Organic-Framework-Based Supercapacitors: Room-Temperature Synthesis of Electrically Conducting MOF-Based Nanocomposites Decorated with Redox-Active Manganese

Electrically conducting zirconium-based MOF (Zr-MOF)-carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposites were synthesized at room temperature. Redox-active manganese sites were then installed in the Zr-MOF and nanocomposites to enable redox hopping in the MOF phase. The Mn-decorated Zr-MOF-CNT nanocomposites show much higher pseudocapacitive performance than both the Mn-decorated Zr-MOF and the Mn-decorated CNT.

Computations show that the coordination to Mo of ethyl vinyl or divinyl ethers by a terminal vinyl carbon is by far more favorable than routes involving the complexation to ether oxygen or end ethyl carbon. The Mo-vinyl coordination significantly activates the vinyl carbon directly linked to ether oxygen, thus making easier the nucleophilic attack of the hydroxo ligand.

Ruthenium-Catalyzed C-H Bond Activation/Arylation Accelerated by Biomass-Derived Ligands

Readily available biomass-derived ligands significantly improved the catalytic activity of [(η6-p-cymene)RuCl2]2 for ortho C-H bond activation/arylation of 2-phenylpyridine with a variety of (hetero)aryl chlorides under water-based reaction conditions. The ligand levulinic acid achieved 7-fold enhancement, as the ligand-assisted route is energetically more favorable.

Nanoscale surface chemistry was used to direct the self-assembly of TiO2 anatase nanocubes into a three-dimensional superlattice. High nanocrystal solubility induced by 3,4-dihydroxyhydrocinnamic acid and weak electrostatic attraction due to surface charge and NH4+ counterions led to the formation of colloidal crystals with a high degree of translational and orientational order.

Anodization of tin foils in buffered oxalic acid at low voltages leads to the formation of oriented layers of sub-microsized SnO2 plates, whose orientation is related to the domains of the underlying polycrystalline, but oriented β-Sn foil. Salt (PPN+)2{FeII(TPyzPzEt8)4- (ZnCl2)2}2- was obtained by reducing iron(II) octaethyltetrapyrazinoporphyrazine with zinc dust. The coordination of ZnCl2 units to meso- and pyrazine nitrogen atoms of the TPyzPzEt8 macrocycle is observed for the first time allowing to increase acceptor properties of the macrocycle.
