Coupled Dynamics of Anode and Cathode in Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

An external reference electrode is used to monitor the cathodic potential during the operation of a direct methanol fuel cell and a direct formic acid fuel cell under the regular and oscillatory regimes. Cathodic oscillations synchronized with the cell voltage dynamics, which had not been reported so far for fuel cells, are observed in these systems. The results can be attributed to two main coupling processes, namely, coupling through proton concentration and a global coupling stemming from the control mode (potentiostatic or galvanostatic).

Get In: Bimetallic copper-indium catalysts were synthesized by using a coprecipitation method. Distinct phase evolutions and product distributions can be achieved with varying metal compositions. The Cu-In catalysts are found to be among the best reported In-based catalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction to CO or HCOOH, with selectivity depending on structure-sensitive binding strength of key reactive intermediates.

A word to the wires: Hematite particles are prepared by using xonotlite nanowires (XNWs) as growth modifiers. The concentrations of XNWs and iron(III) ions can control the morphology and size of the hematite particles. The obtained particles exhibit good catalytic performance in the oxygen evolution reaction, affording a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with an overpotential of 370 mV, a small Tafel slope of 65 mV dec−1, and good stability in alkaline electrolyte.

Novel Perovskite Materials for Thermal Water Splitting at Moderate Temperature

Clean hydrogen can be produced through water splitting at moderate temperature (700 °C) by two-step reversible thermochemical cycles based on the perovskite oxides Sr2CoNb1−xTixO6−δ (x=1, 0.7; δ=number of oxygen vacancies). These compounds show outstanding hydrogen yield, making them potentially useful for real applications.
